Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING I CHOSE

We married the following spring.

The ceremony was small.

A garden overlooking the water.

White flowers.

Warm sunlight.

Family and close friends.

Lily and Grace wore matching dresses.

They carried little baskets of petals.

And they took their responsibilities very seriously.

Natalie walked me down the aisle.

Daniel waited beneath an arch decorated with roses.

When he saw me, his eyes filled.

I smiled.

“You look nervous.”

He laughed softly.

“Terrified.”

“Good.”

He grinned.

“Good?”

“Means you understand what you're getting into.”

He laughed.

Then took my hands.

Our vows were simple.

We promised honesty.

Patience.

Respect.

And the courage to face difficult things together.

When Daniel spoke, his voice trembled.

“Claire, I met you on one of the worst days of your life.”

He looked into my eyes.

“And I wish I could erase the pain you experienced.”

I squeezed his hands.

“But I wouldn't erase the woman you became.”

Tears filled my eyes.

He continued.

“You taught me that love isn't about fixing someone.”

He smiled.

“It's about standing beside them while they build the life they deserve.”

When it was my turn, I looked at him.

“Daniel, I once believed marriage meant trusting someone enough to give them everything.”

My voice shook.

“Now I know it means choosing someone who respects what you keep for yourself.”

He smiled.

“You never asked me to forget my past.”

I squeezed his hands.

“You helped me believe I could have a future.”

When the officiant pronounced us husband and wife, Daniel kissed me beneath the spring sunlight.

The guests applauded.

Lily and Grace cheered.

And for the first time in my life, I understood what it felt like to marry someone because I wanted to.

May you like

Not because I was afraid of losing them.

But because I trusted the life we were building together.
