Chapter 2 - THE VIDEO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Melissa brought me into a quiet conference room overlooking the harbor.
She found bottled water, a changing table, and a comfortable chair where I could feed the babies.
For several minutes, I concentrated on Lily and Grace.
Their breathing.
Their tiny fingers.
The familiar warmth of their bodies.
Anything except the image of Ryan kissing another woman.
Melissa sat across from me.
“Claire, I need to explain something.”
I looked up.
“The recording?”
She nodded.
“We had permission to film the reunion for our internal staff page. The photographer was recording when Ryan approached.”
I swallowed.
“Did he record everything?”
“Most of it.”
I closed my eyes.
“Wonderful.”
“We won't publish it.”
“Thank you.”
She hesitated.
“Captain Mercer has requested a copy for the internal investigation.”
I nodded.
“That's fine.”
Melissa leaned forward.
“I also want you to know that Ryan's employment situation is separate from your marriage. The company will investigate according to its policies.”
“I understand.”
She looked at the babies.
“They're beautiful.”
I smiled weakly.
“Thank you.”
“Are they identical?”
“No. Lily has my eyes. Grace has Ryan's.”
The words hurt more than I expected.
Melissa noticed.
She didn't comment.
Instead, she asked whether I had somewhere safe to stay.
I told her I'd booked a hotel near the harbor.
She offered to arrange transportation.
I accepted.
An hour later, I was checking into a modest hotel room when my phone began ringing.
Ryan.
I declined the call.
He called again.
And again.
Then came the messages.
Claire, please answer.
You're overreacting.
I made a mistake.
Don't destroy our family over something meaningless.
I stared at the last message.
Something meaningless.
Our marriage.
Our promises.
My trust.
Apparently, all of it meant less than a few months of entertainment.
I placed the phone facedown.
Then Lily started crying.
Grace followed thirty seconds later.
I picked them up.
One in each arm.
And began rocking.
“It's okay, girls,” I whispered.
“Mommy's here.”
I said it again.
And again.
Until I realized I wasn't only comforting them.
I was trying to convince myself.
That evening, someone knocked on the hotel room door.
I looked through the peephole.
Ryan.
He stood in the hallway holding a bouquet of roses.
I didn't open the door.
“Claire,” he called softly.
“I know you're in there.”
I remained silent.
He knocked again.
“Please. I just want to talk.”
I picked up my phone.
Then sent one message.
Leave. We can communicate in writing about the babies.
A moment later, his voice changed.
“You're really going to throw away our marriage?”
I stared at the door.
And for the first time, I understood something.

Ryan wasn't upset because he'd hurt me.
He was upset because he'd been caught.
