Chapter 12 - THE GIRLS WHO CHOSE THEIR OWN NAME

Lily and Grace were almost three when they began calling Daniel “Danny.”
He never asked them to.
Never encouraged them to replace their father.
He simply showed up.
He attended birthday parties.
Helped with bedtime stories.
Learned which stuffed animals belonged to which child.
He knew Lily hated peas.
He knew Grace couldn't sleep without her yellow blanket.
He knew both girls believed pancakes tasted better when shaped like stars.
One evening, Lily climbed onto his lap.
“Danny?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Are you staying?”
Daniel looked at me.
Then back at her.
“What do you mean?”
“Staying here.”
He smiled.
“As long as your mommy wants me around.”
Lily considered that.
Then nodded.
“Good.”
Grace climbed onto his other knee.
“Me too.”
Daniel laughed.
“Both of you?”
Grace nodded seriously.
“Both.”
I watched from the doorway.
My heart felt full.
Not because Daniel had replaced Ryan.
He hadn't.
Ryan remained their biological father and had his own relationship with them.
But Daniel had become someone else.
Someone steady.
Someone kind.
May you like
Someone who loved them without asking for anything in return.
And that was its own kind of family.
