Chapter 7 - MERCER SIGNED HIS OWN END

Adrian Mercer entered Costello Holdings on Monday morning as if nothing had changed.

Gray suit.

Blue tie.

Calm.

For nineteen years, people had moved aside when he walked with Damian.

Now Damian understood why Mercer liked standing one step behind him.

People never looked closely at the second man.

The board meeting began at nine.

Mercer believed Damian had suffered trauma serious enough to compromise judgment.

That story had already been planted.

He presented emergency governance documents.

Included:

Temporary proxy.

Medical concern memorandum.

Draft asset-transfer authorization.

All fraudulent or misleading.

Damian remained silent.

Let him speak.

Mercer continued for twenty-two minutes.

Then asked the board to vote.

Damian finally said:

“You forgot the twins.”

Mercer stopped.

“What?”

“The trust.”

Damian leaned back.

“Temporary authority changes if both direct heirs survive.”

Mercer’s face changed by less than a millimeter.

Enough.

Damian continued:

“You planned for them not to.”

Silence.

Nico entered.

Federal investigators followed.

Then outside counsel.

Forensic accountants.

Mercer did not run.

Smart.

He looked at Damian.

“Whatever you think you found—”

Damian placed the greenhouse notebook down.

Mercer stopped.

Leon’s handwriting.

Everything.

“You should've burned the old passage yourself.”

Mercer looked almost impressed.

“The maid.”

Damian’s eyes became cold.

“Her name is Clara Hayes.”

Mercer smiled.

“She made you sentimental.”

“No.”

Damian leaned forward.

“She made me look at the things you trained me not to see.”

Mercer asked for counsel.

Good.

He was arrested without gunfire.

Without a theatrical execution.

But Victoria remained missing.

Three days later she made one final mistake.

She contacted the family attorney using an old emergency channel.

She wanted immunity.

In return:

Original proxy papers.

Emails.

Her testimony.

Prosecutors negotiated.

Not Damian.

He had no control over criminal justice.

That frustrated him.

Healthy.

Victoria was arrested at Logan Airport after returning from Montreal.

She cooperated.

Her statements completed the case against Mercer.

She also admitted what Damian needed to hear once.

Not in private.

In deposition.

“Did you knowingly leave Oliver and Owen inside Costello Manor during an armed attack?”

Long silence.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I was afraid.”

“Did you believe Briggs would retrieve them?”

“Yes.”

“Did you instruct him to?”

“No.”

“Did you say the children would slow you down?”

Victoria cried.

“Yes.”

“And did you say Damian Costello could have more children?”

“Yes.”

May you like

Damian stopped reading there.

Enough.
