Chapter 4 - THE MOTHER WHO CAME BACK WITHOUT HER CHILDREN

Victoria contacted Damian five days later.

Video call.

Unknown encrypted account.

Nico traced nothing useful.

She appeared inside a hotel room.

Hair tied back.

No jewelry.

No visible injury.

“Damian.”

He stared.

“Where are you?”

“I can't tell you.”

“Are you with Mercer?”

Her face changed.

Enough.

“What happened that night?”

“I was scared.”

“You packed diamonds.”

“I panicked.”

“You left our sons.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Briggs was there.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I thought he would get them.”

“You told him they would slow you down.”

Victoria’s face drained.

“He told you?”

“He survived.”

Silence.

“I didn’t mean it.”

“Which part?”

“Damian—”

“Did you know the attack was coming?”

She cried.

He waited.

Finally:

“Yes.”

Something in him became still.

“How long?”

“Two days.”

He closed his eyes.

“You had forty-eight hours.”

“Mercer said nobody would die if I followed instructions.”

Damian almost laughed.

“Men with rifles entered the nursery.”

“He said it would look like an attack.”

“You believed that?”

“No.”

Truth.

“I wanted to.”

Worse.

Victoria explained.

Mercer told her Damian planned to divorce her after the port restructuring.

False.

He showed forged emails.

Promised financial security.

Said Damian’s enemies were going to move against the estate anyway.

If she cooperated, she could control the aftermath.

“Cooperated how?”

“Give him schedules.”

“Security routes?”

“Yes.”

“The Boston meeting?”

“Yes.”

Damian’s face hardened.

“You sent me there.”

“Mercer said you’d be delayed, not killed.”

“You're lying.”

She cried harder.

Maybe.

Maybe not.

“And the boys?”

“He said they would be taken somewhere safe.”

“But when gunmen came, you still left.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

There.

Choice.

Damian asked:

“Where were you going?”

“The boat.”

“With the diamonds.”

“I needed money.”

“You had access to millions.”

“Not if you died.”

Cold logic.

Then Victoria said:

“Mercer was supposed to meet me at the marina.”

“And?”

“His men tried to kill Briggs.”

“Yes.”

“I realized Mercer never intended to let me leave.”

So she ran.

Not to police.

Not to Damian.

For herself.

Damian asked:

“Why call now?”

Victoria looked toward something offscreen.

“Because Mercer wants documents from your father’s trust archive.”

“What documents?”

“The original guardianship schedule.”

Damian’s pulse changed.

If Mercer could forge the proxy against an authentic schedule, he might still try to make the transfer look valid after the fact.

Then Victoria whispered:

“He knows Clara heard the warehouse order.”

Damian went still.

“What?”

“He said the maid should have died in the fire.”

The call disconnected.

Damian was already dialing Clara.

She answered from Providence.

“Hello?”

“Where are you?”

A pause.

“You know where I am.”

“Is security there?”

“Yes.”

“Your mother?”

“Asleep.”

“Do not leave.”

Clara’s voice cooled.

“Damian.”

He stopped.

Not Mr. Costello.

First name.

“Ask.”

His hand tightened around the phone.

“Please stay inside until Nico confirms the perimeter.”

Better.

“Why?”

“Mercer knows you survived.”

Silence.

Then:

“Okay.”

Damian closed his eyes.

“Thank you.”

Protection without ownership.

Still learning.
