Chapter 6 - THE BOX INSIDE THE WALL

Damian did not send Clara back.

He sent investigators.

Good.

The greenhouse survived most of the fire.

Behind the rusted vent they found the metal box.

Inside:

Flash drives.

Printed account ledgers.

Copies of port contracts.

Photographs.

And one handwritten notebook.

Belonged to Leon Varga.

Insurance.

Criminals apparently trusted betrayal enough to keep receipts.

The drives contained Mercer’s entire shadow operation.

More than $46 million diverted over six years.

Payments to rival crews.

Bribes.

Surveillance on Costello executives.

Information about Damian’s movements.

Evidence Mercer had manufactured external threats, then used those threats to expand his security authority and financial control.

He had been making himself indispensable.

Damian read one memo twice.

Maintain pressure around principal. Dependence improves compliance.

Principal meant him.

Every attack.

Every scare.

Every warning from Mercer:

Let me handle it.

You need more security.

Trust fewer people.

Mercer had built Damian’s cage one emergency at a time.

Nico said:

“He trained you.”

Damian looked at him.

“What?”

“To believe everybody outside his circle was dangerous.”

That was hard to hear.

Worse because it was true.

Then they found Victoria’s promised compensation.

Twenty-five million dollars.

Villa in France.

New identity structure.

She had not merely panicked.

She had negotiated.

Again:

Fear and greed could coexist.

The final document mattered most.

A scheduled transaction set for eleven days later.

If Mercer could produce temporary control of the family trust, three waterfront companies would transfer to shell buyers.

Value:

$310 million.

Purchase price:

$94 million.

Mercer would strip more than $200 million in value.

He still believed the original trust papers could let him manufacture authority.

Damian decided to let him try.

Clara heard the plan.

“No.”

He blinked.

“You are not involved.”

“Good.”

“I learned.”

“Barely.”

He almost smiled.

Then Clara became serious.

“You're not planning to kill him.”

Damian’s face closed.

“He tried to kill my sons.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Silence.

“No.”

She waited.

Damian exhaled.

“I want him to watch the transfer fail.”

May you like

“That sounds healthier.”

“Don't get used to it.”
