Chapter 5 - CLARA’S MOTHER KNEW WHAT FEAR COST

Clara’s mother, Ruth Hayes, was sixty-one and unimpressed by billionaires.
Damian discovered that when he visited the Providence hospital two days later.
He asked first.
Clara said yes.
Important.
Ruth looked him up and down.
“You’re the gangster.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“Mom.”
Damian almost smiled.
“Allegedly.”
“Rich?”
“Yes.”
“Dangerous?”
“Sometimes.”
“Good answer.”
Then Ruth looked toward her daughter.
“She almost died for your children.”
“I know.”
“Then why is she worried about missing work?”
Damian looked at Clara.
Clara looked away.
Ruth continued:
“She told me her medical leave was paid.”
“It is.”
“Then why is she calculating bus fare?”
Clara sighed.
“Mom.”
Damian understood.
Clara was not afraid of current wages.
She was afraid of what came after.
Job.
Housing.
Her mother’s treatments.
The long tail of surviving something expensive.
He wanted to say:
I’ll pay everything.
He knew better now.
Instead:
“Clara, what happens if you never return to the estate?”
She looked at him.
“I lose staff housing.”
Damian frowned.
“You live in staff housing?”
“A cottage on the north property.”
He genuinely had not known.
“How long?”
“Three years.”
“And if employment ends?”
“Thirty days.”
Ruth said:
“That is a leash.”
Clara closed her eyes.
Damian deserved it.
He called his attorney later.
Every employee housing agreement was reviewed.
Medical leave no longer affected occupancy.
Termination required a transition period.
Emergency aid became a formal benefit, not discretionary charity.
One tiny reform inside an empire built on much larger problems.
Still.
Start somewhere.
Then Clara remembered another detail from the hidden passage.
A voice.
Not Mercer.
Another man.
“Proof means both cribs.”
She had heard it before.
Where?
Weeks earlier.
At a staff security briefing.
Leon Varga.
Cufflink 04.
Now voice + cufflink.
Investigators had enough to strengthen the case.
Leon was found in Newark attempting to use a false passport.
He cooperated after prosecutors showed him the evidence.
And he talked.
Mercer had paid him.
Victoria supplied schedules.
Mercer arranged the Boston hit.
Leon opened the estate.
The objective:
Kill the twins.
Burn the nursery.
Make identification difficult.
Damian was supposed to die separately on I-93.
Victoria was supposed to survive long enough to sign temporary control to Mercer.
Then?
Leon looked down.
“What?”
Damian asked.
“He was going to kill her too.”
Of course.
“Why?”
“No witnesses.”
Damian almost felt sorry for Victoria.
Almost.
Then Leon added:
“Mercer said something else.”
“What?”
“If Clara Hayes survived, find her first.”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
“Why?”
“Because she knows where the twins were found.”
That sounded wrong.
“What does that matter?”
Leon looked confused.
“I don't know.”
Clara did.
The greenhouse passage.
She had not told anyone one detail.
While crawling out, she saw a small metal lockbox wedged behind the old vent.
May you like
She had assumed it was construction debris.
Now she realized somebody might have hidden something there.
