Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH HE COULD NO LONGER HIDE

After Lena returned home, Dante began telling her things he'd never shared.

About his childhood.

His father.

The violence he'd witnessed.

The way he'd learned to equate control with safety.

They sat on the porch one evening.

The lake shimmered beneath the sunset.

Dante looked down.

“My father believed love made men weak.”

Lena listened.

“He taught me that if you cared about something, you had to control every threat around it.”

Dante swallowed.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Lena looked at him.

“You were controlling me.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

She took a breath.

“And when I asked for your attention, you treated me like a problem.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Dante whispered:

“I was afraid of failing you.”

Lena looked down.

“So you stopped trying?”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

She began crying.

Dante didn't reach for her immediately.

He waited.

Then she took his hand.

“I don't know if we can fix this,” she whispered.

Dante nodded.

“Neither do I.”

He looked at her.

“But I'm willing to do the work.”

Lena swallowed.

“What work?”

“Counseling.”

“Honesty.”

“Changing the way I live.”

His voice strengthened.

“And accepting that you may never choose me again.”

Lena stared.

For the first time, Dante wasn't offering diamonds.

A penthouse.

A vacation.

A grand gesture.

He was offering accountability.

And that mattered.

Over the following months, they attended counseling separately and together.

They discussed trust.

Boundaries.

The emotional distance that had grown between them.

Dante began making changes in his businesses.

Reducing his involvement in criminal operations.

Cooperating with legitimate oversight.

Building a future that didn't depend on intimidation.

Lena watched.

Carefully.

Not because she wanted to be convinced.

May you like

Because she wanted to know whether the changes were real.

And slowly, she began to believe they were.
