Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT LENA NEARLY LOST EVERYTHING

At twenty-nine weeks pregnant, Lena woke with severe abdominal pain.

She tried to stand.

Then stopped.

Something was wrong.

She called emergency services.

Then Margaret.

Then Dante.

He answered immediately.

“Lena?”

Her voice trembled.

“I'm going to the hospital.”

Dante went still.

“What happened?”

She swallowed.

“Pain. The doctor said I need to be checked.”

Dante closed his eyes.

“I'm coming.”

At the hospital, doctors evaluated Lena and the baby.

They monitored contractions.

Checked the baby's heartbeat.

And explained that she needed observation.

Lena lay in the hospital bed.

Terrified.

Dante arrived several hours later.

He stopped in the doorway.

“Lena.”

She looked up.

Her eyes filled.

“Dante.”

He approached.

“Can I sit?”

She nodded.

He took her hand.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Lena whispered:

“I'm scared.”

Dante's eyes filled.

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“What if something happens?”

He swallowed.

“We'll listen to the doctors.”

His voice trembled.

“And we'll face whatever comes.”

Lena began crying.

Dante held her hand.

He didn't promise that nothing bad could happen.

He didn't pretend he could control the outcome.

He simply stayed.

After monitoring and treatment, the doctors told them the immediate situation had stabilized.

Lena needed rest and follow-up care.

The baby's heartbeat remained reassuring.

Dante closed his eyes.

Relief washed over him.

That night, Lena woke and found him sitting beside the bed.

Still there.

His jacket hung over the chair.

His tie was loosened.

He looked exhausted.

“Dante?”

He looked up immediately.

“Yes?”

She smiled faintly.

“You can sleep.”

He shook his head.

“I'm okay.”

Lena studied him.

For years, she'd waited for him to come home.

Now he was sitting beside her hospital bed, refusing to leave.

She whispered:

“Thank you for coming.”

Dante took her hand.

“Thank you for calling.”

And for the first time, Lena felt something she hadn't felt in months.

Not certainty.

May you like

Not forgiveness.

But hope.
