Chapter 4 - The Hundred-Million-Dollar Check

The standing ovation died down into a tense, electrifying murmur.
Victor Blackwood stood on the ballroom floor, the stage lights reflecting off the cold beads of sweat forming across his forehead. Every high-profile camera in the room—including the live feeds of three national entertainment networks covering the gala—was pointed directly at his face.
"A charming parlor trick," Victor said, forcing a dry laugh into his lapel microphone. "A gifted child who managed to memorize an unauthorized leak of my upcoming studio release. Clever, but hardly proof of—"
"You made a public wager, Mr. Blackwood," Maestro Julian Vance interrupted, stepping onto the stage stairs. His voice carried the unquestioned authority of a lifetime at the pinnacle of the global classical arts. "Four hundred witnesses heard your terms. Every microphone recorded your words: 'Play it perfectly, and I will write a check for one hundred million dollars.'"
Victor’s assistant, Marcus, leaned close to his boss, whispering in sheer panic. "Sir, the board members of Blackwood Media are on the livestream. If you renege on camera, the company stock will plummet by morning."
Victor's jaw clenched until his teeth ground together. He looked at Chloe, who stood motionless on the stage, her faded cotton dress a stark contrast against the billionaire's empire.
"Fine," Victor hissed under his breath.
He signaled to Marcus, who reluctantly opened the leather portfolio and pulled out an oversized commemorative draft certified against Victor’s personal holding account at Chase Manhattan.
With trembling fingers, Victor uncapped his gold fountain pen. He scribbled his signature across the bottom line: $100,000,000.00.
He climbed the three stage steps and thrust the paper toward Chloe.
"Take it, little girl," Victor snarled in a low whisper, his eyes burning with venom. "Take your money and leave this city tonight. Because if you ever speak your father's name in public again, you will find out just how cold the world can be."
Chloe took the check with two hands.
She didn't smile. She didn't celebrate.

Instead, she turned the check over, laid it flat on the grand piano's glossy lid, and looked up at the main broadcast camera.
"I don't want your blood money, Mr. Blackwood," Chloe said clearly. "I want the FBI to open the evidence locker from November 12th, 2019."
