Chapter 3 - The Signature in the Chords

As Chloe approached the fourth minute of the piece, the composition shifted dramatically.

The cascading arpeggios gave way to a delicate, counter-intuitive fugue. The left hand executed a complex series of staccato bass notes while the right hand floated through high, bell-like harmonics.

Maestro Julian Vance stood up from his seat at table one, his hand over his mouth.

"My God..." Vance whispered to the French conductor beside him. "Look at the recurring chord progression in the fourth register."

"What is it, Julian?"

"It's the musical cipher," Vance said, his voice trembling with realization. "E-B-A-C-B-E. In German musical notation, that spells E-L-I-A-S."

Gasps rippled across the room.

Chloe transitioned into the grand finale. Her small hands flew across the eighty-eight keys with blistering velocity, executing an octave-spanning glissando that culminated in a triple-forte unresolved minor chord that hung in the vast air of the ballroom like a suspended lightning strike.

She held the sustain pedal. The vibration slowly decayed into total, absolute silence.

For five agonizing seconds, nobody breathed.

Then Maestro Vance began to clap.

Slowly at first. Then with thunderous intensity.

Within three seconds, the entire room of four hundred elite guests, critics, and media moguls rose to their feet in a standing ovation that rattled the chandeliers.

"Bravo!" someone shouted from the balcony.

"A masterwork! A living miracle!"

Chloe did not bow. She stood up from the wooden bench, looked past the cheering crowd, and locked her clear hazel eyes directly onto Victor Blackwood.

"That was Movement Three," Chloe said into the stage microphone. "The movement you couldn't finish because my father died with the final pages locked in his briefcase."
