Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN EVERYONE FINALLY SAW

Two years after the Ashmore gala, Delia stood before forty-three employees in a renovated freight warehouse.

The company had survived.

The legitimate operations were profitable.

Wages were paid on time.

And the workers had elected representatives to participate in workplace decisions.

Delia had been promoted to chief financial officer.

She still checked payroll reports herself sometimes.

Old habits.

But she no longer worked unpaid nights trying to conceal her father's mistakes.

She had a team.

A salary.

A future.

And people who respected her.

That afternoon, the company celebrated the opening of a new distribution center.

Martin handed her a microphone.

“Speech.”

Delia laughed.

“I hate speeches.”

“Then keep it short.”

She looked around.

At the drivers.

The warehouse staff.

The office workers.

The people whose paychecks she'd worried about for years.

She took a breath.

“Two years ago, this company nearly collapsed.”

The room quieted.

“Not because the people doing the work failed.”

She looked at Martin.

“But because the people in charge forgot who the business was supposed to serve.”

Several employees nodded.

Delia continued.

“I used to think my job was just numbers.”

She smiled.

“But numbers represent people.”

“Hours worked. Rent paid. Children fed. Families supported.”

Her voice strengthened.

“And every person behind those numbers deserves to be seen.”

Applause filled the warehouse.

Delia stepped down.

Near the entrance, Casimir waited.

He wore a dark suit.

No entourage.

No dramatic entrance.

Just a quiet smile.

“You were wonderful,” he said.

Delia laughed.

“I was terrified.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“You rubbed your finger against your thumb before you started.”

She looked down.

The old ink stain was long gone.

Casimir took her hand.

“Still trying to rub it away?”

Delia smiled.

“Some habits take time.”

He kissed her forehead.

“Good thing we have time.”

Outside, the afternoon sun illuminated the loading docks.

Delia thought about the girl she'd been at the gala.

Standing behind a marble column.

Wearing a borrowed dress.

Believing she was invisible.

She remembered Vivian's words.

Nobody sees you.

Then she looked at Casimir.

At the workers waving goodbye.

At the building she'd helped save.

And understood something.

She hadn't become valuable because a powerful man noticed her.

She had always been valuable.

He had simply been the first person in that ballroom willing to acknowledge it.

Delia squeezed his hand.

“Ready?”

Casimir smiled.

“Whenever you are.”

May you like

Together, they walked into the sunlight.

And this time, Delia didn't look for a place to hide.
