Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY OWNED HER WORK

With Beckett Freight under investigation, its legitimate employees faced uncertainty.

Forty-three families depended on their wages.

Delia couldn't stop thinking about them.

She met with Amelia and a court-appointed administrator overseeing the company's operations.

“What happens to the employees?”

The administrator sighed.

“We're evaluating whether the legitimate business can continue.”

Delia opened her folder.

“I've prepared a plan.”

He looked surprised.

“A plan?”

She nodded.

“Several freight contracts are still profitable. The problem wasn't the business itself. It was the diversion of money.”

She explained her proposal.

Separate the legitimate operations.

Improve financial controls.

Protect payroll.

Renegotiate certain supplier contracts.

The administrator listened carefully.

Then asked:

“Who prepared this?”

“I did.”

He studied the figures.

“This is impressive.”

Delia looked down.

For years, she'd heard that her work was simple paperwork.

Now someone was treating it as expertise.

The restructuring process took months.

But eventually, a group of legitimate investors acquired the viable operations.

Delia was offered a senior financial management position.

She accepted.

With a proper salary.

A written contract.

And an office with a door that actually closed.

On her first day, Martin placed a peppermint candy beside her keyboard.

“For the accountant who finally gets to go home on time.”

May you like

Delia laughed.

And for the first time, she believed she might.
