Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Lifelong Retribution

================================================================================
Four months later, Courtroom 4B of the United States District Court in Brooklyn convened for the formal sentencing hearing of Marco Santoro.
The gallery was packed with federal prosecutors, port commissioners, homicide detectives, and hundreds of citizens who had followed the harrowing case of the Romano family.
Sitting in the front row, dressed in a sharp charcoal three-piece suit, was myself. Beside me sat Grace Vance, wearing an elegant dark navy dress, her hand resting gently inside mine.
And sitting between us, radiant, healthy, and holding hands, were Olivia, Sophie, and Nora.
Marco Santoro sat at the defense table in a bright orange federal prison jumpsuit, his hands and feet secured with heavy steel transport chains. His slick, manicured appearance was entirely gone; he was gaunt, unwashed, and trembling, staring fixedly at the floor to avoid the gaze of the courtroom sketch artists.
Chief Federal Judge Harrison Miller adjusted his spectacles and delivered the court’s judgment with thunderous moral authority.
“The defendant, Marco Santoro, executed a calculated, depraved, and monstrous betrayal of the sacred bonds of loyalty, family, and public trust,” Judge Miller declared, his voice echoing through the vaulted marble hall. “To murder a young mother in broad daylight, and then spend fourteen months psychologically torturing her three minor children under the guise of an armed protector, is an act of depravity that defies human comprehension.”
The judge brought down his heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that echoed like thunder.
“Marco Santoro is hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment at ADX Florence without the possibility of parole, commutation, or administrative transfer. May God have mercy on your soul, because the United States of America will have none.”
A collective, emotional cheer erupted from the public gallery.
Marco collapsed forward onto the table, weeping in dry, ragged gasps as federal marshals hauled him to his feet and escorted him through the heavy iron holding doors forever.
Sophie looked up at me, her eyes shining with quiet, profound victory.
“Daddy,” she whispered softly.
“Yes, my brave girl?”
“Mommy is smiling today.”
I lifted Sophie into my arms, holding Olivia and Nora against my side, and kissed each of their cheeks with all the love in my soul.
May you like
The darkness was defeated. The truth had won.
