Chapter 4 - The Shadow with the Silver Badge

Tears of pure, agonizing fury blurred the crayon lines.
Fourteen months.
For four hundred and twenty days, my three little girls had carried the terrifying weight of their mother's executioner sitting at their breakfast table, riding in their school transport, and patrolling their bedroom hallways at night.
They hadn't lost their voices from trauma.
They had gone silent to protect each other from being murdered.
I pulled Sophie, Olivia, and Nora into my chest, wrapping my arms around all three of them in a fierce, trembling embrace. I buried my face into their soft hair, weeping silently against their shoulders.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, my voice thick with unspeakable sorrow. “Daddy was blind. Daddy didn't see. But I swear to you on your mother’s soul... nobody will ever threaten you again. You are safe now.”
For the first time in fourteen months, Nora wrapped her tiny arms around my neck and whispered into my collar: “Daddy... don't let the wolf come in.”
“The wolf is dead, Nora,” I replied, my voice turning into cold, unyielding iron. “He just doesn't know it yet.”
I gently released them, kissed each of their foreheads, and turned toward Grace.
“Who are you, Grace?” I asked, studying the calm, intelligent composure in her eyes. “An ordinary domestic cleaner doesn't discover an assassination conspiracy in eight weeks.”
Grace straightened her posture. Her gentle domestic demeanor melted away, revealing the rigid, disciplined stance of a trained operative.
“My legal name is Grace Vance,” she said in a quiet, measured voice. “My father was Captain Thomas Vance—the lead homicide detective who handled Isabelle’s case in Nassau County. Three weeks after Isabelle’s murder, my father died in a suspicious hit-and-run collision on the Long Island Expressway. His personal case files were stolen from our family home that same night.”
My breath caught. “Thomas Vance... the detective who told me the shooter had inside intelligence on Isabelle’s morning schedule.”
“My father knew Isabelle’s security convoy had been deliberately diverted by an internal command,” Grace continued. “When the police department closed the file as a random syndicate hit, I knew the killer was inside your circle. I spent a year creating a flawless domestic alias, secured top-tier agency placement, and applied for this post. I didn't come here to clean your floors, Mr. Romano. I came to finish my father's investigation.”
I looked at the woman standing before me with profound, boundless respect.
“Did you find the proof, Grace?”
Grace reached into the waistband of her skirt and pulled out a microscopic encrypted micro-SD card.

“Everything is on this chip,” she whispered. “The offshore payments, the surveillance logs... and the audio from the morning Isabelle died.”
