Chapter 5 - The Decrypted Vault at 2:00 AM

================================================================================

At 2:00 AM, while Marco Santoro was asleep in the security guest quarters on the north side of the estate, Grace and I sat inside the subterranean panic room beneath the master wine cellar.

The chamber was shielded by two feet of reinforced tungsten steel, equipped with a dedicated satellite uplink that completely bypassed the mansion’s internal network.

Grace inserted the micro-SD card into my tactical laptop.

The files decrypted on the high-resolution display:

The Cayman Wire Logs: Wire transfers totaling $5,000,000 sent to a shell corporation registered under the name Apex Maritime LLC. The ultimate beneficiary was Marco Santoro’s private offshore account in Grand Cayman.

The Originating Source: The funds were wired directly from Falcone Global Logistics—the corporate front of Don Alberto Falcone, my bitterest rival in the New York shipping trade.

The Motive: Three weeks before her death, Isabelle had conducted an independent audit of the Romano Foundation’s charitable trust. She discovered that Marco had been using our humanitarian shipping containers to smuggle untraceable military weapons and narcotics for the Falcone cartel, laundering the profits through our logistics hubs.

“Isabelle confronted him,” I whispered, staring at the accounting logs with burning eyes.

“She gave Marco forty-eight hours to turn himself in to federal prosecutors,” Grace explained, pointing to an encrypted calendar entry on Isabelle’s recovered backup. “She told him she was going to tell you that evening after picking the girls up from preschool.”

“So Marco had her killed outside the school gates before she could speak to me.”

“And he threatened your daughters immediately after,” Grace said, her voice trembling with emotion. “He arrived at the scene before the paramedics. When he carried Sophie into the back of his SUV, the preschool director’s security camera captured him leaning down and whispering directly into her ear.”

Grace clicked on an archived video file.

The camera footage was grainy, but the timestamps were undeniable:

Marco was seen holding five-year-old Sophie by the shoulders, pointing his thumb toward Isabelle’s bleeding body on the pavement, and mouthing the words:

‘If you tell your father, you're next.’

My fist slammed into the steel desk with enough force to crack the laminate.

Marco hadn't just betrayed me. He hadn't just murdered the love of my life. He had spent fourteen months terrorizing my orphaned babies inside their own home, smiling in my face while holding a gun to their heads.

“Dominic,” Grace said softly, resting her hand gently over my trembling fist. “Do not execute him in the woods. That is what he expects. Let him walk into the light where his shame will destroy his name forever.”

I looked at Grace, feeling the chaotic rage inside me harden into a cold, lethal strategy.

“Call Federal Prosecutor Marcus Cole,” I commanded in a voice of absolute finality. “Tell him the Romano family is ready to deliver New York.”
