Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Justice

Six months later, Courtroom 4B of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Patricia and Daniel Miller.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery was me, holding six-month-old Lily in my arms. Lily was healthy, radiant, and giggling softly, wearing a cheerful yellow dress, her head completely healed without a single scar.
Judge Evelyn Sterling took the bench with thunderous authority, adjusting her glasses as she reviewed the three-hundred-page evidentiary binder.
“In the matter of the State of Ohio versus Patricia Miller and Daniel Miller,” Judge Sterling began, her voice echoing with absolute judicial severity. “The court has reviewed the undisputed video evidence, the forged financial documents, and the medical records of an innocent three-week-old child.”
Judge Sterling brought her heavy wooden gavel down with a resounding crack.
“Patricia Miller, for the crimes of Attempted Murder, Felonious Assault of an Infant, and Aggravated Insurance Fraud, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-five years in state prison at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, without the possibility of early parole.”
Patricia collapsed onto the defense table, letting out a broken, hysterical shriek.
“Daniel Miller, for your role in the conspiracy, child endangerment, and forgery, you are sentenced to eight years in state correctional custody, followed by mandatory financial restitution of $250,000.”

Daniel slumped into his chair, weeping silently into his cuffed hands as bailiffs stepped forward and escorted both defendants through the heavy iron holding doors.
I stood up, kissed Lily’s cheek, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun, leaving the Miller name behind forever.
