Chapter 2 - The Flatline in Room Four

The shrill, rhythmic screech of the code-blue alarm echoed down the sterile hallway of the pediatric trauma unit.

“Push zero-point-one milligrams of epinephrine!” Dr. Blake’s urgent voice barked through the half-open door of Trauma Room 4. “Continue compressions! Fifteen to two! Bag-valve-mask steady!”

I stood pinned against the cold drywall, clutching my smartphone with white-knuckled fingers. Across the hallway, Patricia stepped closer, her expensive silk shawl draped over her shoulders, her face a mask of predatory concern.

“Emily, sweetheart,” Patricia whispered, her breath smelling of peppermint and cold calculation. “If you tell the doctors about that little push, the police will open a domestic investigation. They’ll put Lily into child protective custody. Is that what you want? To have your baby taken away by state foster care?”

Daniel grabbed my arm, his fingers digging into my sweater. “Emily, Mom is right. We have to present a united front. You stumbled because you were sleepy. That’s what we tell the social worker. It protects all of us.”

I looked down at Daniel’s hand on my wrist, then looked into his desperate, spineless eyes.

“My baby’s heart has stopped beating, Daniel,” I whispered, my voice chillingly calm. “And you’re standing here coaching me on how to protect the woman who struck her mother.”

“Emily—”

“Get your hands off me,” I said.

Before Daniel could answer, the double doors of the trauma unit flew open. Two Columbus Police Department patrol officers marched down the hallway, led by Detective Marcus Vance of the Special Victims Unit.

“Who reported an active domestic assault involving an infant?” Detective Vance demanded, displaying his gold badge.

Patricia immediately stepped forward, putting on a trembling, theatrical expression, clutching her chest. “Officer, thank God you’re here! My daughter-in-law is suffering from severe postpartum psychosis! She had a breakdown and dropped our precious grandchild on the floor, and now she’s making wild accusations!”

Detective Vance looked at Patricia, then looked at the red, swelling outline of four fingers stamped across my left cheek.

“Ma'am,” Detective Vance said, looking directly at me. “Are you the mother?”

“I am Emily Miller,” I said, lifting my phone. “And I didn't drop my daughter because of exhaustion. Patricia struck me across the face with full force while I was holding my three-week-old child.”

I unlocked my phone screen.

“And unlike Patricia, I don't rely on manufactured stories. I rely on cloud-synced optical feeds.”
