Chapter 5 - The Forensic Audit

We moved into the warmth of the living room while the security detail gathered Julian’s personal clothing and threw them into plain cardboard boxes on the porch.
Baby Maya was placed safely into a newly delivered, pristine handcrafted bassinet that Arthur's staff had brought in the third sedan.
Julian sat on the edge of the leather ottoman, his head buried in his hands, sweating profusely despite the winter chill.
"Arthur... Elena... please," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. "I made a terrible mistake! The pressure of the executive presidency got to me. Serena manipulated me! She took advantage of my stress! I love Elena! I love our baby!"
"You called our daughter 'clutter' fifteen minutes ago, Julian," I said, looking down at him with profound, unshakeable indifference. "You smashed her crib with a golf club because she cried during your phone call with Serena."
Nathan Cross opened his forensic accounting tablet and placed it on the coffee table.
"Mr. Sterling, over the last eighteen months, you authorized $1.4 million in fraudulent corporate billing through Vance Industries," Nathan revealed. "You funneled $600,000 through a dummy shell entity named Apex Consulting Ltd.—which we traced directly to Serena Davis’s personal checking account. You used corporate credit lines to pay for luxury suites, private charters to St. Barts, and offshore gambling debts."
Julian’s face turned gray. "Those were legitimate client entertainment expenses..."
"Client entertainment doesn't include purchasing two diamond tennis bracelets from Cartier with company purchase orders," Arthur said, his voice hard as iron. "We have the invoices, the serial numbers, and the encrypted chat logs between you and Serena discussing how you would 'bleed the old man dry' once the merger completed."

Arthur leaned forward, resting his hands on his cane.
"You thought my daughter was powerless because she was kind, Julian. You mistook grace for weakness. That was your fatal miscalculation."
