Chapter 9 - EMILY’S FIRST BIRTHDAY

Emily turned one in Pittsburgh.
Small party.
Rachel’s backyard.
Cupcakes.
A cheap bubble machine that broke after twenty minutes.
Derek came.
Yes.
That decision surprised several people.
But Emily’s birthday was not a battlefield.
He arrived alone.
No Patricia.
That was his choice.
He brought a wooden push toy.
Normal.
Reasonably priced.
I noticed that too.
For months he had been learning to ask instead of assume.
“Can I take pictures?”
“Yes.”
“Can my mom video call later?”
“Not during cake.”
“Okay.”
Progress often sounds incredibly unimpressive.
That is why it is real.
After Emily destroyed a cupcake, Derek and I stood near the fence.
He watched her crawl through grass.
“I think about the fifteen dollars constantly.”
I said nothing.
“I thought I was proving a point.”
“What point?”
“That you were overreacting.”
I stared at him.
“You knew I was in labor.”
“Yes.”
“And you thought leaving me without transportation would teach me I was dramatic?”
His face reddened.
“Yes.”
There it was.
Cruel.
Small.
True.
“I’m ashamed.”
“You should be.”
He nodded.
No demand that I comfort him.
Good.
Then:
“I used to think being responsible meant earning enough that everyone depended on me.”
I looked at him.
“Now?”
“I think I made dependence because it made me feel important.”
That was more insight than I expected.
I did not forgive the marriage back into existence.
There was no marriage to restore.
May you like
But I respected the sentence.
