Chapter 2 - THE FIFTEEN DOLLARS

Derek told everyone I disappeared because I was hormonal.
That phrase reached me through my mother-in-law before I blocked her too.
According to Patricia:
I had “panicked during labor.”
Rachel had “filled my head with nonsense.”
And Derek had only missed the birth because I “ran off without telling him where I was going.”
Interesting.
The fifteen dollars disappeared from his version.
So did the client dinner.
So did six months of skipped prenatal appointments.
That is what people do when reality embarrasses them.
They edit.
Fortunately, I had learned something from living with Derek.
Keep receipts.
His texts from earlier that evening still existed.
At 6:14 p.m.:
Contractions getting closer. Can you come home early?
Derek:
Dinner starts at 7. I told you this already.
Me:
They’re around 7 minutes apart now.
Derek:
Then call Riverside if you’re worried.
At 7:03:
Five minutes. I need you here.
Derek:
I’m walking out the door. You have the hospital bag.
Then the kitchen camera.
Derek insisted on having cameras around the house because he worried about package theft.
One covered part of the kitchen.
Cloud storage preserved thirty days.
My attorney sent a preservation request immediately.
The video showed me leaning against the counter during a contraction.
Derek opening his wallet.
Dropping a ten and a five beside my bag.
Then leaving.
No audio was necessary to understand enough of the moment.
The camera also captured me removing my wedding ring and placing it where the money had been.
I watched it once.
Never again.
When Derek’s attorney received the preservation notice, the public story became quieter.
Not because Derek suddenly felt ashamed.
May you like
Because his own attorney apparently understood evidence.
