Chapter 7 - MY OWN PAYCHECK

I returned to work part-time when Emily was four months old.

Remote medical billing.

Rachel helped with childcare.

Then daycare.

Then a routine.

My first paycheck went into an account in my name.

I stared at the notification for nearly a minute.

It was not enormous.

It did not need to be.

For the first time in years, nobody received an alert when I spent $18.72.

I bought strawberries.

Diapers.

Coffee.

Then one ridiculous thing.

A yellow lamp for my bedroom.

$89.

Rachel saw it.

“Very rebellious.”

“You have no idea.”

I laughed.

That lamp became absurdly important.

Not because Derek would have forbidden a lamp.

He would have asked:

“Why do we need that?”

Then:

“Can’t you wait?”

Then perhaps bought a $400 power tool the following weekend.

Control rarely announces itself as:

I control you.

Sometimes it sounds like:

Do we really need that?

Asked only about one person’s needs.

I started therapy.

Not because I was mentally ill.

Because I needed to understand how I had normalized so much.

The therapist asked:

“When did you begin asking permission?”

I couldn’t answer.

That frightened me.

It had happened slowly.

The marriage had not transformed from happy to controlling on one Tuesday.

It accumulated.

Derek took over bills because he was “better with money.”

Then passwords.

Then investments.

Then insurance.

Then vehicle paperwork.

Then tax preparation.

Then criticism whenever I asked questions.

Efficiency became authority.

By the time I left, I could technically access several things.

But emotionally, I felt as if I needed clearance.

That was what I had to rebuild.

Not just a bank balance.

May you like

My reflex to decide.
