Chapter 7 - The Coronado Auction Trap

Desperation makes proud men foolish. Rather than accepting the settlement in silence, Arthur made one final, reckless gamble. Over the weekend, he conspired with an unscrupulous private commercial lender to execute an unauthorized emergency lien auction on the Coronado commercial property, hoping to liquidate the asset before the lis pendens title restriction was fully indexed in the county registry.
On Tuesday morning, an exclusive private auction was held in the ballroom of the Hotel del Coronado. Several high-profile real estate investors sat in plush chairs, ready to place bids on the prime beachfront parcel at a discounted distress price of $10 million.
Arthur stood near the auctioneer’s podium in a tailored navy suit, sweating through his collar, trying desperately to project confidence. Chloe stood at the back of the room, clutching her designer bag, whispering to Bradley Sinclair that this was merely ‘a routine portfolio restructuring.’
“We will open the bidding at nine million dollars,” the auctioneer announced, raising his gavel. “A rare, generational trophy asset on Ocean Boulevard...”
“The bidding is terminated,” a clear, powerful voice echoed from the entrance.
Every head in the ballroom turned. I walked down the center aisle, flanked by Julian Hayes and two armed San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies carrying certified judicial writs.
“This property is under active Superior Court receivership,” Julian announced loudly, projecting his voice across the silent room. “Any bid placed today is legally void, and any party attempting to transfer funds will be named as co-conspirators in fraudulent asset dissipation.”
Arthur rushed forward, his face mottled with rage. “This is a private corporate proceeding! Officers, remove these trespassers!”
The lead deputy stepped directly into Arthur’s path, handing him a brightly colored court warrant. “Arthur Vance, by order of Judge Eleanor Sterling, you are ordered to immediately surrender all corporate seals, deeds, and keys. Continued interference will result in immediate custodial arrest for contempt of court.”
The wealthy investors began murmuring in disgust, quickly grabbing their portfolios and exiting the ballroom in droves. Bradley Sinclair stared at Chloe in utter disbelief. “Chloe... what is this? You told me your family owned this entire block outright!”

“Bradley, wait! It’s just a family misunderstanding!” Chloe cried, grasping at his arm.
Bradley pulled his arm away as if her touch were toxic. “My family does not associate with fraud, Chloe. The engagement is off.”
