Chapter 5 - The Injunction

Friday morning arrived with crisp, ocean air and the cold hammer of legal reckoning. At precisely 9:15 AM, Judge Eleanor Sterling of the San Diego County Superior Court reviewed the forensic handwriting analysis, the affidavit of surviving attorney Thomas Bennett, and the financial audit logs.

Within twenty minutes, Judge Sterling signed a comprehensive Emergency Injunction and Temporary Restraining Order. Every single domestic and business account linked to Arthur Vance and Vance Coastal Properties was frozen instantly. An interlocutory receivership was placed over the Coronado commercial property, stripping Arthur of all management authority.

At 11:30 AM, Chloe was standing at the counter of an exclusive La Jolla boutique, attempting to put down a fifty-thousand-dollar deposit for her imported French lace wedding veil. Her future mother-in-law, Mrs. Eleanor Sinclair, stood beside her, sipping sparkling water.

“I’m terribly sorry, Miss Vance,” the boutique manager said with polite hesitation, swiping the black titanium card for the third time. “The transaction was flagged with a Code 84—Account Frozen by Judicial Order.”

Chloe’s face flushed crimson. “That is ridiculous! Try my other card. It’s an unlimited platinum line!”

“That one is declining with the exact same restriction, ma'am.”

Mrs. Sinclair lowered her glass, her eyebrows arching with icy skepticism. “Chloe, darling, is there a liquidity problem your father forgot to mention?”

Before Chloe could stammer an excuse, her iPhone erupted with frantic calls. When she answered, Arthur’s voice was borderline hysterical. ‘Chloe! Do not use any cards! Get to my office immediately! We’ve been served! Clara has filed an injunction—she found Bennett!’

Simultaneously, two uniformed process servers walked into Arthur’s prestigious downtown law firm, handing stamped court summonses directly to the senior managing partners while Arthur watched in frozen horror from his corner office. The partners immediately convened an emergency board meeting to suspend Arthur Vance pending an internal ethics investigation.

While the storm battered them, I was sitting at a sunlit cafe by the harbor, watching Matthew eat blueberry pancakes with extra whipped cream. My phone rang; it was Arthur. I let it ring until it went to voicemail.

His message was breathless, stripped of all former arrogance: ‘Clara... please. We need to talk as a family. There has been a massive misunderstanding. Let’s sit down tonight at the house. Just you and me. Do not ruin everything I have built.’

I deleted the message without answering. The time for private family negotiations had ended the moment they treated my son like an unwanted burden.
