Chapter 4 - Chloe’s Diamond Mask

The Grand Del Mar Resort was illuminated by thousands of fairy lights on Thursday evening for Chloe’s official engagement gala. Bradley Sinclair was the heir to an old-money shipping dynasty, and Chloe had spent the last eight months spinning an intricate web of lies, presenting herself as a multi-million-dollar heiress to the Montgomery real estate fortune.

She wore a custom Vera Wang gown and flaunted a five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring. Every detail had been paid for through Arthur’s corporate accounts—which, in reality, were entirely funded by the stolen commercial rents from the Coronado property.

Inside Julian Hayes’ high-rise office in downtown San Diego, the mood was vastly different. Monitors illuminated the conference room, displaying forensic accounting spreadsheets that mapped every single dollar Arthur had extracted from Evelyn’s real estate holdings over the past four years.

“It’s staggering,” Julian said, sliding a certified report across the glass table. “Arthur diverted $3.8 million in gross commercial rental income into Vance Coastal Properties. From there, he routed over $700,000 directly into Chloe’s personal checking accounts for luxury car leases, European vacations, plastic surgery, and this extravagant engagement party.”

“And what about Grandma Evelyn’s true last will?” I asked, leaning forward.

Julian smiled, tapping a leather-bound folio. “We obtained the original certified copy from Evelyn’s longtime private estate attorney, Thomas Bennett, whom Arthur had falsely told you was deceased. Bennett is very much alive and living in Santa Barbara. Evelyn’s genuine 2018 Testamentary Trust leaves 100% of the Coronado commercial property, the family homestead on Ocean Boulevard, and all liquid dividend assets directly to you, Clara, in trust for Matthew.”

“Arthur and Chloe received nothing?”

“Arthur was left a token five-dollar gold coin and an explicit note from Evelyn stating: ‘To my son Arthur, whose greed exceeds his honor, I leave the memory of what you could have been.’ Chloe was left entirely out of the will due to her history of unrepentant financial exploitation.”

A tear slipped down my cheek. Grandma Evelyn had seen right through them all along. She had tried to shield Matthew and me with her final act on earth, only for Arthur to bury the truth under forged filings and legal intimidation.

“What is the next step, Julian?”

Julian stood up, adjusting his cuffs with predatory precision. “Tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM, we file an Emergency Ex Parte Motion for an Immediate Asset Freeze and Lis Pendens against all accounts and real estate held by Arthur Vance, Victoria Vance, Chloe Vance, and Vance Coastal Properties. By noon tomorrow, Chloe’s cards will decline, Arthur’s law firm trust accounts will be locked down, and the sheriff will serve the summons.”

“Let them dance tonight,” I said softly, looking out over the sparkling city lights. “Tomorrow, the music stops.”
