Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT SOMEONE FOLLOWED HER HOME

I noticed the car on a Thursday evening.
A gray SUV.
Three blocks behind me.
It turned when I turned.
Slowed when I slowed.
And remained parked across from my office when I stopped.
I called Dominic.
He answered immediately.
“Mallory?”
“Someone may be following me.”
His voice changed.
“Where are you?”
I told him.
“Stay inside the building. I'll contact security and the police.”
I looked toward the window.
The SUV remained parked.
My stomach tightened.
“Dominic.”
“Yes?”
“Do you think this is about the investigation?”
He paused.
“Possibly.”
I swallowed.
“I'm scared.”
His voice softened.
“I know.”
Then he said:
“You don't have to prove you're fearless.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“Just stay somewhere safe until help arrives.”
I nodded.
“Okay.”
Security personnel arrived.
The SUV drove away before police could identify the driver.
But the message was clear.
May you like
Someone wanted me to stop asking questions.
And I wasn't going to.
