Chapter 7 - THE HUSBAND WHO REFUSED TO OWN HER
Dominic found me standing beside the kitchen window.
“Everything all right?”
I nodded.
“Derek called.”
His expression changed.
“What did he want?”
“Help.”
Dominic studied me.
“And?”
“I said no.”
He smiled faintly.
“Good.”
I turned.
“You're not going to ask what he said?”
“Only if you want to tell me.”
I looked at him.
For a moment, I remembered the man I'd once loved.
Derek had demanded explanations for everything.
Where I went.
Who I spoke to.
Why I wore certain clothes.
Why I didn't lose weight.
Why I wasn't more like Kendra.
Dominic was different.
He had more power than Derek could imagine.
But he'd never used it to make me feel small.
I crossed the kitchen.
Wrapped my arms around him.
He looked surprised.
Then held me.
“What was that for?”
I smiled against his chest.
“For being you.”
He kissed my hair.
“Dangerous compliment.”
I laughed.
Then looked up.
“Dominic?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you for respecting my work.”
His expression softened.
“Mallory.”
He touched my cheek.
“You were brilliant before you married me.”

“And you'll be brilliant whether anyone knows you're my wife or not.”
