Chapter 3 - The Father’s TrapI held up Dad’s handwritten letter. The room was so still you could hear the rain tapping on the tall bay windows.

“Read it, Elena,” Attorney Price said gently.
I unfolded the paper and read Dad’s words:
‘To my relatives and anyone who came looking for an easy payout: If you are hearing these words, Julian has already made a scene and demanded what he calls his birthright. For thirty years, I bailed Julian out of bad debts, funded failed companies, and forgave his deceit. But when I became ill, he didn't ask how long I had left—he asked where the bearer bonds were stored.’
Julian’s fists clenched, his knuckles turning pale.
‘I spent fifty years building Sterling Logistics on trust and precision. I did not leave Julian money because he had already stolen his inheritance while I lay dying. Every transfer he made was monitored by forensic accountants. The accounts he emptied were bait, deliberately structured to trigger federal grand larceny and wire fraud statutes upon my death. I leave Julian exactly one thing: the legal debt of $4.6 million owed to my estate.’
“You forged this!” Julian roared, lunging toward the desk to snatch the letter.
Before he could take two steps, the two federal investigators moved in front of him, flashing badges and blocking his path.
“Touch any evidence on this desk, Mr. Sterling, and you will be arrested on the spot for obstruction of justice,” Senior Special Agent Miller stated firmly.
Julian froze. Serena broke into tears, collapsing onto an armchair.
“Elena,” Julian gasped, his voice trembling as he switched from rage to desperate pleading. “Elena, we’re brother and sister. Blood! You can't do this to me! Dad was bitter because he was sick! We can settle this as a family!”

I looked at my brother, feeling no anger, only the quiet calm of someone who had watched a bully finally run out of room.
“Dad gave you thirty years of family, Julian,” I said. “You chose the safe.”
