Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of a GhostThe study fell into a dead silence so heavy that the ticking of the grandfather clock sounded like a metronome counting down Julian’s freedom. Uncle Raymond cleared his throat, trying to regain his footing.

“Price, this is an unannounced intrusion on a private family gathering,” Raymond said, stepping forward. “We don’t need outside auditors looking over Arthur’s personal affairs before probate is even filed.”

Attorney Samuel Price did not flinch. He produced a crisp, certified folder bearing the seal of the New York State Department of Financial Services.

“This is not an informal check, Mr. Sterling,” Price said evenly. “Arthur Sterling filed a formal petition for financial forensic review six months ago. These investigators are here by court appointment.”

Julian’s breathing turned ragged. “That’s impossible! Dad was slipping! Elena manipulated him while he was on dialysis painkillers!”

Price calmly picked up the first sealed folder from the steel safe and broke the red wax seal. He spread the certified wire logs across Dad’s desk.

“Over the last eighteen months,” Price read aloud, “Julian Sterling executed fourteen unauthorized electronic transfers totaling $4.6 million from Arthur Sterling’s primary accounts into an offshore shell entity known as Apex Horizons Holdings in the Cayman Islands. These funds were liquidated into speculative crypto derivatives and high-stakes casino credit accounts in Atlantic City.”

The relatives gasped in unison. Aunt Beatrice dropped her tea napkin. Serena’s smile vanished completely as she looked at her husband with wide, frightened eyes.

“That was a corporate venture bridge loan!” Julian shouted, his face turning bright red. “Dad verbally approved it!”

“Then why,” I asked quietly, looking Julian dead in the eye, “did you have Serena forge Dad’s signature on the commercial equity authorizations while Dad was in intensive care undergoing heart surgery last October?”

Price opened the second folder, laying out the hospital visitor logs and forensic handwriting reports. The room went cold. Serena took a step back, bumping into the bookcase, clutching her designer bag to her chest like a shield that had suddenly turned to glass.
