Chapter 9 - GRADUATION

At graduation, I had three tickets.

Then got two extras from a friend whose grandparents could not come.

Mom.

Ray.

Michael.

Danny.

Cara.

Five.

Perfect.

I walked across the stage.

The audience blurred beneath the lights.

Then I heard three voices louder than everyone else.

Mom.

Ray.

Michael.

All shouting my name like idiots.

I loved it.

Afterward, we took photographs.

One with Mom.

One with Ray.

One with Michael.

Then Danny said:

“Why don’t all of you stand together?”

Nobody moved.

Then Mom laughed.

“Why not?”

So we did.

Mom on one side.

Ray beside her.

Me in the middle.

Michael on the other.

Danny and Cara crouched in front.

Somebody took the picture.

Later Michael gave me an envelope.

I groaned.

“No giant checks.”

“It isn’t.”

Inside was a letter.

Not money.

He wrote about leaving.

About shame.

About watching pictures of my life from far away.

About being jealous of Ray.

Then:

I used to think being your real father meant proving nobody could replace me. I understand now that I abandoned a place in your life and then got angry when someone treated that empty place with care.

I stopped reading.

Looked at him.

He nodded toward the letter.

“Finish.”

The last line:

If you ever call me Dad, I’ll be grateful. If you never do, I will still spend the rest of my life trying to behave like one.

That was the first gift he gave me that had no price.

I folded the letter.

Then hugged him.

He held on too tightly.

May you like

I let him.
