Chapter 5 - DANNY’S BASEBALL GAME

The real test came on a Saturday in April.

Danny had a baseball game.

I had a track meet.

Same time.

Different towns.

Ray had promised Danny months earlier he would be there.

Then my relay team unexpectedly qualified for finals.

I said:

“Go to Danny’s game.”

Ray frowned.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve got finals.”

“He has baseball.”

“I’ll be fine.”

Mom went to my meet.

Ray went to Danny’s game.

Normal blended-family logistics.

Then Michael texted.

You competing today?

I stared.

He remembered.

Yes. 2:30.

Where?

I sent the address.

At 2:24, he arrived.

No announcement.

No gift.

No camera.

Just coffee and sunglasses.

He sat beside Mom.

I saw him from the track.

For one second, I forgot my lane assignment.

Afterward, he found me near the bleachers.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“You drove two hours.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked confused.

“Because you were running.”

That answer was so ordinary it almost broke me.

We did not talk about fathers.

No speeches.

We got tacos.

He asked why track shoes had spikes.

I explained.

He pretended to understand.

That evening Ray asked:

“How’d Michael do?”

I laughed.

“Do?”

“Dad audition.”

“Ray.”

“What?”

He smiled.

“I’m kidding.”

Then:

“I’m glad he came.”

I looked at him.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because loving you isn’t a position with one opening.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Ray never needed Michael to fail so he could matter.

May you like

That was one of the reasons he mattered so much.
