Chapter 5 - THE NOTEBOOK NOBODY WAS SUPPOSED TO FIND

The moss-green notebook contained more than Clara's personal notes.
It held a detailed record of suspicious financial transactions.
Clara had noticed discrepancies in the Cypress project.
Invoices that didn't match contracts.
Payments routed through unfamiliar companies.
And signatures that looked copied rather than written.
She began recording the irregularities.
Quietly.
Carefully.
Then she found the name Northbridge Meridian Holdings.
The company was registered through a network of shell entities.
One of its authorized representatives was Marcus Sterling.
Another was Julian Vain.
Matteo stared at the records.
Julian had worked for his family for twenty-six years.
Marcus worked in procurement.
Together, they had arranged a fraudulent transfer worth $3.8 million.
Matteo looked at Clara.
“You discovered this alone?”
She nodded.
“I wasn't sure who I could trust.”
He swallowed.
“Not even me?”
Clara looked down.

“You're very busy, Mr. Bellini.”
For some reason, those words hurt more than an accusation.
