Chapter 15 - THE MORNING THE BELLS RANG AGAIN

One year after Matteo found Clara freezing outside his headquarters, Christmas returned to Chicago.
Snow covered the sidewalks.
Lights glowed in the windows.
And the rebuilt bungalow smelled like vanilla and orange.
Clara stood in the kitchen wearing a green sweater.
The oven timer rang.
She pulled out a loaf cake.
Then heard a knock.
Matteo stood outside holding flowers.
“Am I late?”
She smiled.
“Only five minutes.”
He stepped inside.
The house was warm.
The tree glittered beside the window.
Photographs of Clara's mother hung above the fireplace.
And for the first time in years, Clara felt that Christmas belonged to her again.
Matteo looked around.
“Beautiful.”
She smiled.
“Thank you.”
He hesitated.
Then reached into his coat.
A small velvet box.
Clara froze.
“Matteo?”
He smiled nervously.
“I've faced men with guns and never felt this frightened.”
She laughed softly.
He opened the box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
“Clara Vance.”
Her eyes filled.
“Will you marry me?”
For a moment, she couldn't speak.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.”
Matteo exhaled.
He slipped the ring onto her finger.
Then kissed her.
Outside, church bells began ringing.
Snow fell softly.
And Clara remembered the previous Christmas.
The cold granite.
The broken shoe.
The bruises.
The notebook.
The fear.
She had believed her life was ending.
Instead, it had been beginning.
Matteo held her close.
“Merry Christmas, Clara.”
She smiled against his shoulder.
May you like
“Merry Christmas.”
And for the first time in a long time, she believed in tomorrow.
