Chapter 2 - THE MAN IN THE TOOL TRAILER

The yacht changed course before the last guest had finished protesting. In the medical cabin, Anya helped a paramedic remove Boris's wet clothes while Nikolai stood outside the door, his hands shaking with a rage he could not afford to indulge. The shepherd, Misha, slept beneath the examination table, wrapped in a towel. A veterinarian was already being summoned to the marina.

Boris had hypothermia, dehydration, and a respiratory infection. The paramedic recommended immediate hospital transfer. Nikolai agreed without hesitation. When Boris caught his sleeve, however, he insisted on one thing: "The key. Don't lose the key."

Nikolai closed his fingers around the brass. "You matter more than a safe."

"That's what your father said the night he died," Boris whispered.

Anya saw Nikolai go still. He had told her almost nothing about his childhood, but everyone aboard knew the official story: Viktor Voronin died in an accidental shipyard fire, leaving his twelve-year-old son in Boris's care. Nikolai had built his empire on the ashes of that tragedy.

In the passageway, Anya received a call from Miami Children's Hospital. Her son, Maksim, had developed shortness of breath. He was stable, but his cardiologist wanted a fresh evaluation before proceeding with the planned operation. Anya gripped the wall. Nikolai noticed her face and told his assistant to arrange transportation for her immediately.

"Don't promise me miracles," she said. "Just make sure the doctors can do their work."

He nodded. "You're right."

That was the first thing about Nikolai Voronin that surprised her: when she challenged him, he listened.

At the marina, police officers waited beside an ambulance. Nikolai had called them about the alleged forgery, stolen benefits, and property transfer. His security chief, Pavel Orlov, looked uneasy. "You brought the authorities into family business?"

"Someone abused a disabled man under my roof," Nikolai replied. "That stopped being private the moment I learned of it."

Across the dock, Ksenia's escort vehicle had not returned. Pavel claimed she had been taken to a secure room. Nikolai demanded her location. Pavel hesitated.

Then Anya noticed a black SUV leaving the service gate. Its rear window lowered briefly. Ksenia sat inside beside a man with a gold serpent ring.

Boris saw the ring from his stretcher. His face drained of color.

"Kolya," he whispered. "That's the man who locked your father inside."
