Chapter 13 - THE NAME ON THE ROSE GARDEN GATE

Z

Spring brought the first court rulings on the pension theft and property fraud. Boris's financial access was restored, and restitution proceedings began. The harbor property transfer was challenged successfully, with final ownership questions handled through the courts. Markov faced separate criminal proceedings concerning the historical fire and the modern scheme. Not every allegation could be resolved at once, but the evidence was no longer buried beneath concrete.

Nikolai visited Viktor's grave with Boris. For years he had brought expensive flowers and spoken about victories. This time he brought a single yellow rose from his mother's garden.

"I found your letter," he said. "I wish you'd been here to explain it yourself."

Boris stood beside him in a motorized wheelchair, Misha resting in the grass. "He'd have been proud you chose the law over bloodshed."

Nikolai smiled sadly. "He might also have asked why it took so long."

"Then he'd have sounded like a father."

At the children's hospital, Anya watched Maksim take his first supervised swim lesson. His instructor kept the session short. Maksim emerged beaming, demanding a towel and a sandwich. Anya cried into the towel before handing it over.

That afternoon, Nikolai arrived with a small wooden model of the original Voronin dock office, restored from old photographs. Inside was a compartment for Boris's brass key. He had commissioned it not as a trophy, but as a reminder of what secrecy had cost them.

"The key belongs to Boris," Anya said.

"I know. He asked me to keep it until Maksim is old enough to hear the story."

She studied him. "And what story will you tell?"

May you like

"That an old man was mistreated, a young woman refused to look away, and a child helped us remember why the future matters."

Anya reached for his hand. For once, neither pulled away.
