Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT LOCKED GATES

Z

Maksim's recovery took time. There were medications, follow-up appointments, and days when he tired easily. But he began returning to school activities with his medical team's guidance. He made a drawing of a boat with five passengers: himself, Anya, Boris, Misha, and Nikolai. The dog occupied the captain's chair.

Anya laughed when she saw it. "Misha can't drive."

"He can supervise," Maksim replied.

Nikolai helped fund a transparent assistance program for children needing cardiac care, administered by an independent nonprofit. Anya accepted a paid role advising the program on families' practical needs, but only after a competitive hiring process and a contract she reviewed herself. She refused to become a decorative symbol for his redemption.

Meanwhile, Nikolai sold several businesses connected to criminal associates and retained outside compliance advisers for the legitimate shipping operations. The process cost him influence and exposed his past decisions to scrutiny. He did not emerge untouched. He began to understand that accountability was a continuing obligation rather than a public announcement.

One evening, he invited Anya to dinner at a small waterfront restaurant. She asked whether it was a date. He said he hoped so, but that she was free to say no.

"I need time," she answered.

"Take it."

They ate anyway, talking about books, the city, and the strange fact that Nikolai had never learned to cook rice properly. When Anya laughed, he felt something he had not known he missed: the pleasure of being liked without being feared.

At the end of the evening, he walked her to her car. "May I see you again?"

May you like

"Maybe," she said, smiling. "If you learn to cook rice."

The next morning, Nikolai called Boris for instructions. Boris laughed so hard he began coughing.
