Chapter 7 - THE FILE MARKED ELLIS

Enzo began reviewing old company records through independent counsel.
He did not tell Marcus Bell.
That decision proved important.
Because Daniel Ellis had not simply been an accountant.
He had been assigned to audit payments connected to a charitable foundation.
The foundation was supposed to fund children's medical programs.
Instead, large sums had been transferred to consulting firms with no clear services.
One of those firms belonged to Celeste Ward.
Another had connections to Marcus Bell.
Enzo stared at the records.
Millions of dollars.
Diverted through layers of accounts.
Approved with signatures that appeared legitimate.
Some bore Enzo's name.
But he had never signed them.
His independent attorney looked grim.
"These documents may have been forged."
Enzo nodded.
"Daniel found this?"
"Possibly."
"Then he disappeared."
The attorney hesitated.
"Yes."
Enzo looked toward the window.
He had spent years building a business empire.
But somewhere inside it, people had been stealing money intended for sick children.
And a young accountant might have vanished because he noticed.
That evening, Enzo called Nora.
"I found something."
Her voice shook.
"About Daniel?"
"Yes."
She went silent.
Enzo continued.
"He was investigating financial irregularities."
Nora closed her eyes.
"I knew it."
"We don't know what happened to him."
"But you believe he discovered something?"
"Yes."
Nora began crying.
For four years, people had told her to move on.
To accept uncertainty.
To stop searching.
Now someone was finally taking her brother seriously.
Enzo waited until she could speak.
Then she whispered:
"Please don't stop."
May you like
His voice softened.
"I won't."
