Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT HIM TO LISTEN

Enzo and Nora grew closer over the following year.
Not because he was wealthy.
Not because she needed saving.
But because they had seen each other at their worst.
Enzo had seen Nora terrified and humiliated, yet brave enough to protect a child.
Nora had seen Enzo helpless beside Lily's hospital bed.
Their relationship began with gratitude.
Then friendship.
Then something neither had expected.
One evening, they walked beside Lake Michigan.
The sky was pink with sunset.
Enzo looked at Nora.
"Can I ask you something?"
She smiled.
"You usually do."
He laughed.
"Why didn't you run that night?"
Nora thought carefully.
"I was scared."
"I know."
"But Lily was six."
Enzo nodded.
"And?"
Nora looked at him.
"She needed someone to care more about her than about being blamed."
Enzo stopped walking.
He looked at her.
Then whispered:
"I think I'm falling in love with you."
Nora's breath caught.
She smiled.
"That's inconvenient."
Enzo laughed.
"Very."
She stepped closer.
"Because I think I'm falling in love with you too."
They kissed beneath the evening sky.
No cameras.
No audience.
May you like
No expensive celebration.
Just two people who had learned that courage and kindness could change everything.
