Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT HIM TO BE GENTLE

Lorenzo had always believed that strength meant never showing weakness.

His father taught him that tears were dangerous.

Kindness was a liability.

Love was something enemies could use against you.

Then Millie entered his life.

She asked questions he couldn't answer.

Demanded bedtime stories.

Corrected his pronunciation of animal names.

And insisted that he learn how to braid hair.

One Saturday morning, Lorenzo sat at Isabella's kitchen table holding three strands of honey-colored hair.

Millie sighed.

"Uncle Lorenzo."

"What?"

"That's not a braid."

He looked at the tangled result.

"It has three parts."

"That's not enough."

Isabella laughed from the doorway.

Lorenzo frowned.

"I negotiate contracts for a living."

Millie looked unimpressed.

"Then negotiate with the hair."

Isabella laughed harder.

Over time, Lorenzo became a familiar presence in Millie's life.

He attended school events.

Read bedtime stories.

And learned that children cared very little about wealth or reputation.

They cared whether you showed up.

Clara watched the change.

One evening, she found Lorenzo sitting on the porch while Millie slept inside.

"Thank you," she said.

He looked up.

"For what?"

"For keeping your promise."

Lorenzo smiled faintly.

"She won."

Clara sat beside him.

"You could have sent her away."

He looked toward the garden.

"I almost did."

Clara studied him.

"But you didn't."

Lorenzo was silent.

Then said:

"She reminded me of Matteo."

Clara nodded.

"She reminds me of him every day."

They sat quietly.

The evening air smelled of magnolias.

Clara looked toward the house.

"I spent years being afraid."

Lorenzo turned.

"Of Bell?"

"Of everything. Losing my job. Losing my apartment. Failing Millie."

He listened.

She continued.

"I thought being strong meant never asking for help."

Lorenzo smiled sadly.

"I thought it meant never needing anyone."

Clara looked at him.

"Maybe we were both wrong."

He nodded.

"Maybe."

There was no romance between them.

Only a growing respect.

Clara loved Matteo.

May you like

Lorenzo loved his brother.

And together, they were learning how to become a family without fear.
