Chapter 11 - THE FAMILY THAT WAS STOLEN

Clara entered Matteo's room with trembling hands.

He sat beside the window.

The afternoon sunlight touched his face.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Matteo looked up.

"Clara?"

She stopped.

The sound of her name in his voice nearly broke her.

"Matteo."

He reached toward her.

She crossed the room.

Dropped to her knees.

And wrapped her arms around him.

They held each other for a long time.

No speeches.

No explanations.

Just the terrible relief of discovering that love had survived what the world had done to them.

Matteo touched her hair.

"I looked for you."

Clara shook her head.

"They told me you were dead."

He closed his eyes.

"I know."

She pulled back.

"There's someone you need to meet."

Matteo looked confused.

Clara smiled through tears.

"Your daughter."

His breath caught.

"Millie?"

She nodded.

"She's five."

Matteo began crying.

Later that afternoon, Isabella brought Millie to the rehabilitation center.

The little girl entered holding her spiral notebook.

She saw Clara first.

"Mommy!"

Clara dropped to her knees.

Millie ran into her arms.

They embraced fiercely.

Clara kissed her daughter's hair again and again.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

Millie began crying.

"You came back."

"I did."

Then Clara turned her gently toward Matteo.

"Millie, there's someone I want you to meet."

The little girl looked at the man in the wheelchair.

He smiled nervously.

"Hello."

Millie stared.

Then looked at the photograph in her notebook.

She looked back at him.

"Daddy?"

Matteo's eyes filled.

"Yes, sweetheart."

Millie approached slowly.

"Are you really my daddy?"

He nodded.

"I am."

She studied him.

Then asked:

"Why didn't you come home?"

Matteo swallowed.

"I wanted to."

Millie considered that.

Then climbed carefully into his lap with Clara's help.

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

"It's okay," she whispered.

Matteo began crying.

"You're here now."

Lorenzo stood in the doorway.

He watched his brother hold his daughter for the first time.

And understood that no amount of money or power could ever equal what had just been returned to their family.
