Chapter 12 - THE FALL OF THE FIVE FAMILIES

The investigation into the port operation expanded rapidly.

Arthur Bell cooperated after his arrest.

Carlo Benedetti faced charges connected to the warehouse fire, unlawful detention, financial crimes, and other offenses.

Several officials were implicated.

The evidence revealed years of corruption.

Lorenzo made a decision that shocked the criminal underworld.

He provided investigators with records from his own organization.

He acknowledged wrongdoing where his businesses had been involved.

He began separating legitimate companies from criminal activities.

It was not a simple transformation.

Some associates resisted.

Others threatened him.

But Lorenzo had seen what secrecy and unchecked power had done to his family.

He would not allow Millie to inherit the same world.

At a meeting with his remaining advisers, Lorenzo stood at the head of the table.

For years, that table had represented power.

Now it represented a choice.

"We're ending the illegal operations," he said.

One man laughed.

"You can't just walk away."

Lorenzo looked at him.

"Watch me."

The transition took time.

There were legal consequences.

Financial losses.

Difficult decisions.

But Lorenzo remained determined.

Meanwhile, Matteo continued rehabilitation.

His progress was uneven.

Some days he walked short distances with assistance.

Other days fatigue overwhelmed him.

Clara stayed beside him.

But she also insisted on rebuilding her own life.

She found a new job.

Returned to school part-time.

And began studying forensic accounting.

She wanted to help expose the kinds of financial crimes that had destroyed her family.

Millie started kindergarten.

She made friends.

Learned new games.

And discovered that not every problem required memorizing forty-eight cards.

Sometimes children were allowed simply to play.

One evening, Lorenzo watched her chase butterflies through Isabella's garden.

Matteo sat beside him.

"She's something, isn't she?"

Lorenzo smiled.

"Extraordinary."

Matteo looked at his brother.

"Thank you."

Lorenzo shook his head.

"She found me."

Matteo smiled.

"Maybe she knew you needed finding too."

May you like

Lorenzo looked toward the garden.

For once, he had no answer.
