Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT THE RIVER GAVE UP ITS SECRETS

Arthur Bell believed he had outsmarted everyone.

He had moved Clara between locations.

Changed vehicles.

Used false names.

And kept his communications brief.

But the investigation had uncovered a network of payments and property records connected to his operations.

One address stood out.

An abandoned riverfront processing facility.

Clara was there.

She had been moved shortly before dawn.

Bell intended to retrieve the ledger and disappear.

But Clara had noticed something.

A loose window latch.

A narrow maintenance corridor.

A security camera that turned away every forty seconds.

She began counting.

One.

Two.

Three.

She waited until Bell left the room.

Then moved.

At the same time, investigators approached the building.

Lorenzo waited at a secure location nearby.

He wanted to go inside.

Every instinct demanded it.

But Amelia had insisted that trained officers handle the rescue.

For once, he listened.

Clara reached the maintenance corridor.

She pushed through a narrow door.

Cold air struck her face.

The river glittered beyond the fence.

She ran.

A shout came from behind her.

"Clara!"

Bell.

She kept moving.

Her shoes slipped on wet concrete.

She reached the fence.

Then heard sirens.

Voices.

Commands.

She dropped to the ground behind a concrete barrier.

Officers moved toward the building.

Bell attempted to flee through a side entrance.

He was arrested.

Minutes later, Clara was escorted to safety.

She was exhausted.

Bruised.

But alive.

Lorenzo saw her from across the parking lot.

He approached slowly.

"Clara Bennett?"

She looked up.

"Where's Millie?"

"Safe."

Her knees buckled.

Lorenzo caught her before she fell.

"She's with my mother."

Clara began sobbing.

"My baby."

"She's safe."

Clara gripped his jacket.

Then whispered:

"Matteo."

Lorenzo froze.

She looked into his eyes.

"Is he alive?"

Lorenzo nodded.

Clara covered her mouth.

For six years, she had carried grief like a second heartbeat.

Now the world had changed in a single breath.

"He's alive," Lorenzo repeated.

Clara began crying harder.

May you like

Then whispered:

"Take me to him."
