Chapter 9 - The Dissolution of the Marriage

Three months later, Courtroom 4B of the State Chancery Court convened for the final divorce decree.

Leo Vance sat at the petitioner’s table in a plain, off-the-rack suit, having lost his executive offices, his luxury sports cars, and his corporate prestige. He looked gaunt, humbled, and completely hollow.

I sat beside Julian Hayes, dressed in a sharp, elegant navy blazer, holding my head high.

Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling reviewed the uncontested financial settlement, the felony convictions, and the pre-marital property deeds.

Judge Sterling struck her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that echoed through the stone chamber.

"The marriage of Elena Vance and Leo Vance is hereby dissolved ab initio on the grounds of felony domestic cruelty and breach of fiduciary trust," Judge Sterling declared.

Judge Sterling signed the master decree.

"Elena Sterling retains 100% of all real estate, intellectual property, corporate capital, and trust assets. Mr. Vance is ordered to pay $280,000 in restitution for unauthorized credit conversions and is subject to a permanent, lifetime protective order."

Leo looked across the aisle at me, his eyes filled with tears of profound, agonizing regret.

"I’m sorry, Elena," Leo whispered across the wood. "I had an angel, and I let wolves tear her apart."

I looked at him, feeling no hatred, no anger—only the clean, weightless freedom of a woman who had reclaimed her life.

"Goodbye, Leo," I said softly, standing up and walking out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
