Chapter 3 - The Deed in the Leather Briefcase

"Estate grounds?!" Agnes shrieked, her voice cracking into shrill laughter. "This is my son Leo’s house! He bought this property with his own executive bonus three years ago! Elena didn't bring a single penny into this family—she was just a penniless orphan he took pity on!"

Julian Hayes, the Senior General Counsel for Sterling Global, stepped forward from behind Alexander.

Julian unlatched a heavy, gold-monogrammed leather briefcase and pulled out a stack of blue-jacketed legal titles bearing the official embossed seal of the County Registrar.

"Let's correct the record, Mrs. Vance," Julian announced with icy precision.

Julian laid the documents across the cluttered foyer table:

The Master Property Deed: The 6,000-square-foot luxury residence at 14 Meadowbrook Lane was purchased 100% in cash by the Elena Sterling Living Trust four years ago.

The Corporate Seed Capital: Leo Vance’s tech logistics firm, Vance Dynamics, was founded using a confidential $5 million non-repayable endowment funded directly by Elena's private inheritance.

The Living Allowance: The $15,000 monthly household stipend Agnes and Chloe drew for groceries, country club memberships, and salon visits came directly from Elena's automated dividend accounts.

Agnes stared at the signatures, her wrinkled face turning the color of curdled milk. "No... no, Leo told me he owned everything! He earned it all!"

"Leo signed a strict confidentiality and fiduciary management agreement," Julian replied, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "Your son is merely an employee of a corporate subsidiary fully owned by Elena Sterling. You have been living on her charity, sleeping in her beds, and eating from her plates while treating her like a scullery maid."

Chloe scrambled off the sofa, her face pale, pointing a manicured finger at me. "Elena! You liar! You pretended to be a normal nobody!"

"I hid my surname because I wanted a marriage based on love, not balance sheets," I whispered, resting a hand against my aching side as Alexander gently wrapped a warm cashmere overcoat over my shivering shoulders. "And all I found was a nest of vipers."
