Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Reckoning

Six months later, the Cook County Criminal Court convened for the sentencing hearing of The State v. Jameson Sterling and Brooke Davis.
Jameson appeared in a wrinkled gray suit, his hair disheveled, his posture completely broken. Beside him sat Brooke, crying quietly into a handkerchief.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in an immaculate ivory tailored suit, watching the proceedings with serene dignity.
Judge Robert Campbell reviewed the final restitution agreements and guilty pleas entered by the defendants.
"Mr. Sterling, Ms. Davis," Judge Campbell stated from the bench, his voice heavy with moral weight. "You abused trust, defrauded employees, and engaged in calculated theft to sustain a lifestyle built on vanity and deceit."
Judge Campbell struck his gavel.
Jameson Sterling: Sentenced to four years in state correctional facility, with mandatory restitution of $220,000 and five years of post-release probation.
Brooke Davis: Sentenced to two years in state correctional facility and ordered to pay $85,000 in restitution.

As bailiffs stepped forward to escort Jameson through the side holding door, he looked back at me one last time. His eyes were hollow, filled with a mixture of shame, regret, and defeat.
I didn't smile. I didn't mock him. I simply gave a slight, dismissive nod and turned to walk out of the courtroom into the bright sunlight.
