Chapter 4 - Eviction Notice

"You wouldn't dare," Jameson's father, Robert, spat, stepping forward with clenched fists. "We are family! You can't throw his parents onto the street!"

"You stopped being family the moment you brought trash bags into my house to pack my deceased grandmother's portrait," I replied, my voice dropping into an arctic register.

I pressed the intercom button on the wall.

"Marcus. You and the team can come in now."

The heavy oak front doors swung open. Marcus Vance, my private head of security and a former state trooper, walked into the foyer accompanied by two armed private security guards and two uniformed county sheriff deputies.

"Good morning, Mrs. Sterling," Deputy Miller said, tipping his hat. "We have the certified trespass notice and eviction warrant signed by Judge Harrison."

Brooke let out a piercing shriek, rushing behind Jameson. "Tell them to leave! Jameson, do something!"

"Mr. Jameson Sterling, Mrs. Eliana Sterling, Mr. Robert Sterling, and Ms. Brooke Davis," Deputy Miller announced, pulling out official citations. "You have ten minutes to vacate the premises with your personal identification and vehicles. Any attempt to remove property belonging to the homeowner will result in immediate arrest for grand theft."

"Wait! My clothes are upstairs!" Brooke cried, her voice trembling. "My bags are in the guest suite!"

May you like

"You may take your purse," I said coldly. "Leave the robe on the chair. You will not walk out of my house wearing a single thread of my clothing."

Sobbing in humiliation, Brooke stripped off the silk robe, standing in her cheap tank top and shorts, shivering under the stern gaze of the deputies. She grabbed her handbag and scrambled out the front door into the rain.
