Chapter 2 - The Debt Trap

Jameson frowned, his arrogance faltering slightly under my icy composure. "What are you talking about? The lender sent a confirmation email yesterday afternoon. The debt is settled."
"The original creditor was settled, yes," I replied, walking slowly to the marble island. I didn't touch the divorce petition. Instead, I pulled a sleek iPad from my leather briefcase and laid it flat on the counter. "Did you read the fine print on the debt assignment clause, Jameson?"
Brooke rolled her eyes, taking another slow sip from my mug. "Don't try to play lawyer, Ruby. Jameson is free of that lien. You paid it. That money became marital property the second you used it for household obligations."
"Oh, sweetheart," I laughed, a low, melodic sound that made his father pause his taping gun. "I didn't pay off his debt. I bought it."
Jameson’s face paled. "You... you what?"
"Through my private holding entity, Aegis Capital LLC, I purchased the promissory note and the underlying security collateral from Apex Commercial Lending at a four percent discount," I explained smoothly. "I am not your savior, Jameson. I am your sole, exclusive lienholder."
I tapped the screen, projecting the certified documents onto the smart refrigerator display.
"The collateral securing that $150,000 note includes your 100% equity stake in Vanguard Design Studio, your 2024 Porsche Taycan, and all personal intellectual property," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "And under Section 9.4 of the covenant, an unapproved attempt to transfer corporate assets or default on monthly interest triggers an immediate acceleration clause."
My phone buzzed. A formal notice of default and seizure had been registered with the county clerk at 8:58 a.m.

"You owe Aegis Capital $150,000 plus legal fees, due in full in exactly twenty-four hours," I smiled. "Default occurs tomorrow morning at nine."
Brooke dropped the ceramic mug. It shattered against the hardwood floor, dark coffee splashing across her bare feet and the hem of my emerald robe.
