Chapter 7 - The Audit Begins

The forensic audit took less than forty-eight hours to expose the rot at Vanguard Design Studio.
I sat in Nathan Cross’s executive boardroom, sipping hot herbal tea while reviewing the forensic report.
Jameson had not only mismanaged the business into massive commercial debt; he and Brooke had engaged in systematic corporate embezzlement. Over eighteen months, they had siphoned over $220,000 of company operating funds to finance luxury weekend getaways, designer jewelry, and Brooke's downtown apartment rent, disguising the payments as business marketing expenses.
To make matters worse, they had failed to remit state employment taxes for their seven junior designers, creating a federal tax liability of over $90,000.

"The criminal referral is ready, Ruby," Nathan said, sliding the file across the mahogany table. "We have clear evidence of grand larceny, tax fraud, and falsification of corporate records. The District Attorney’s white-collar crime division is ready to take the case."
"Submit it," I said without hesitation. "Let the law handle the rest."
