Chapter 9 - The City in the Palm of Her Hand

Under my leadership as Vice President, the Hargrove Trauma & Emergency Response Network was completely revolutionized.
We deployed two hundred state-of-the-art mobile intensive care ambulances across the city, established free emergency clinics in underprivileged neighborhoods throughout the South and West Sides, and funded a $50 million scholarship foundation for aspiring paramedics and nurses.
Margaret made a full, radiant recovery, her health restored completely now that the poison had been eradicated from her life.
And between Adrian and me, the bond forged in crisis grew into a deep, unbreakable love.
One evening, Adrian brought me to the private rooftop observation deck of the Hargrove Tower. The city lights of Chicago sparkled beneath us like a carpet of diamonds, reflecting off the dark, tranquil waters of Lake Michigan.
Adrian stood beside me, taking my hand into his warm, strong palm.
“When you stopped on that sidewalk, Nora,” Adrian said softly, his charcoal eyes glowing with tender emotion, “you thought you were losing your future. You didn't know you were walking straight into mine.”
He reached into his tailored jacket, pulled out a velvet box, and knelt before me on the stone terrace.
Inside the box was a breathtaking, five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring.
“Nora Callahan, will you marry me and rule this city by my side?”

Tears of pure happiness welled in my eyes. “Yes, Adrian. A thousand times, yes.”
Adrian slid the diamond onto my finger, rose to his feet, and pulled me into a passionate, breathtaking embrace under the starlit sky.
