Chapter 10 - Sunlight on Lake Michigan

One year later, the golden summer sun bathed the sprawling gardens and private pier of the Hargrove Estate in Lake Forest.
The air was sweet with the fragrance of blooming white hydrangeas, roasted artisan seafood, and the cheerful melodies of a live acoustic string quartet. Over three hundred guests—paramedics, trauma surgeons, community leaders, and true friends—had gathered to celebrate our wedding.
I stood near the marble balustrade in a breathtaking ivory silk gown that flowed like water in the summer breeze, holding a glass of sparkling cider.
Margaret walked over, dressed in a radiant sapphire lace dress, wrapping her arms around me with tears of immense maternal joy.
“You brought the light back to my son’s life, Nora,” Margaret whispered, kissing my cheek. “You gave this family its soul.”
Adrian walked over from the lawn, looking magnificent in a tailored black tuxedo. He wrapped a strong, protective arm around my waist, pulling me close against his chest.
“What are you thinking about, my brilliant Vice President?” Adrian asked, his deep voice filled with boundless love.
I looked out across the sparkling blue horizon of Lake Michigan, feeling a profound, unshakeable peace settle forever into my heart.
“I was thinking about those eleven minutes on Michigan Avenue,” I smiled, resting my hand over his heart. “It was the best decision I ever made.”

Adrian smiled, leaning down to kiss my lips as our guests cheered and raised their glasses into the golden afternoon sun.
The shadows of the past, the bitter struggles, and the cold street corners were gone forever. Standing tall in the light of truth, surrounded by honor, prosperity, and unconditional love, we were finally whole—a family that would stand strong and bright for all the years to come.
